TV-Series1968-1970 "WackyRaces"wascreatedinresponsetotheratherviolentadventure/superherocartoonsoftheprevioustwoseasons,andevenuponitspremiere,itwasblackballedbythewatchdoggroupActionForChildren'sTelevision.TheyclaimedthatsinceitwasbankrolledbygameshowproducersMerrillHeatterandBobQuigley("HollywoodSquares"),itwasenticingchildrentoplacemonetarywagersontheoutcomeofeachoftheshow's34races.(Hogwash.Ihadtheover/underonhowmanytimesDickDastardly'scontraptionsbackfiredonhim.) ForalltheatypicalHanna-Barberauseofrepeatanimationandlow-budgetmovement,"WackyRaces"wasstillanunusualandentertainingcartoonwhichwouldbegetsuchshowsas"Bailey'sComets,""Laff-A-Lympics"and"Yogi'sSpaceRace."AlotofthehumorderivedfromDastardly'smachinations,althoughmanyoftheotherracersgottoshineaswell.IntheGoldKeycomics,PenelopePitstopwouldeliminatePeterPerfectandRedMaxbyconvenientlygettingthemtofightoverher.Thatwasn'tusedintheshow,althoughitshouldhave.Andit'sdottedwithgreatlines.WhenthenarratorcallsDastardly"TheDraculaofthedragstrip,"Dastardlycounters"Iresentthatremark!"Narrator:"Butdoyoudenyit?"Dastardly:"No,Ijustresentit!"It'sacomedycartoonthatdoesn'tforgetit'sacomedycartoon,somethingthatmanycartoonshowsofthe70sand80sforgot. Andabitoftrivia,Dastardlydidcrossthefinishlinetwicebutwasdisqualifiedbothtimes.ThefirsttimeheextendedthenoseoftheMeanMachineaheadoftheothers(yetinanotherepisode,RufusRuffcutphysicallyextendedhisnecktoreachthefinishlineandthejudgesgavehimthewin--gofigure).Thesecondtime,achainreactioncollisioncausedDastardlyandMuttleytogetbouncedintotheArkansasChuggabug,whichwasinthelead.Dastardlyalsosetaprecedentthefollowingyear--beingthefirst(andtoanyone'sknowledge,only)villaintogethisownshow,"Dastardly&MuttleyInTheirFlyingMachines.
